Since the beginning of domain-names in the internet sphere, many organisations were offering services to find or search for available domain names in the world. So now, the number of us that search for available domain names is absolutely massive.
There are countless sites that offer a search facility, each focussing on a particular set of extensions (e.g. com, net, org etc) and each offering to charge you a fantastic price to register it with them, and then an even better price to host it with themselves, or a partner. There are even countless pieces of software on the market today that can help you search for domain names that are tailored to your specific keyword, or business name. Short .com domain names are now extremely difficult to get your hands on. Even names that don't actually spell are word are very rare these days. If you want a short named domain name, then go for one of the .org, or .info for example. They are just as good, but please beware that you aren't setting yourself up for a legal battle should you step on the toes of an existing company trading under the .com version. Say for example you bought yourself www.qwerty.info and some multi-national already owned and traded under qwerty.com. When they discovered your site, they may take action to get you to transfer it to them.
Okay, most if not all major companies, will buy up all variations of their brand name, under all tld's, and also cover many mis-spellings of their domain names, but be warned.
I frequently use domain search.com to look for my domains. I buy quite a few of them, and tend to buy in bulk because you get them much cheaper that way. Also, the info domains are currently going for less that $1 for a year on godaddy, but it sure pays to shop around.
