Determining the Domain Name Value

These days, there are hundreds of companies offering you a service to determine the value of your domain name. You might get an unsolicited e-mail asking you to take up the service, in which case, they may already have an idea that your domain name may have some value. Remember, your details are publicly available on the whois database, so anyone can see your details.

So, is your domain name worth millions? Well in all probability, the answer will be no. But you never know what lies around the corner. You never know what the next big thing is going to be, or you never know who the next celebrity is going to be. You might just already have a domain name that contains a name of a future celebrity, or future big movie or something like that. And if it happens to be a .COM address, it will be worth 10 times more than most other TLDs.

Say 5 years ago you registered allinpoker.com. You would have gotten that addresses for $10, but with the recent surge in poker popularity over the last few years, you could sell that domain for a 6 figure sum, maybe even a 7 figure sum. Some people make a living trading and dealing in domain names, and they buy up names which have not been renewed. You can also try to predict what's on the horizon, research the next big films, what celebrities are up and coming, and maybe you could make a bundle selling them on.

Another major factor in a domain name value is the length of the name. Short names are very hard to come by these days, and trade for thousands. If you are lucky enough to have a two, three or four letter .COM domain name, you could be sitting on a goldmine.

Be wary of trying the old mis-spelling domain trick however. Say you want to get a domain called YAHOOO.com and it's available, so you buy it. Trust me, once Yahoo discover you are using that name, their lawyers will be at your door threatening to sue if you don't transfer it to them. In fact, most large companies like Yahoo and Ebay for example, spend millions on buying up every possible spelling of their brand name that they can think of. Ebay have thousands of different spellings of their name, and all possible TLDs.
