Hosting Domain Name

Owning your own domain name is one thing, but you have to get it hosted somewhere in order to be able to upload a web site.

Hosting a domain name means one of the thousands of hosting companies will sell you space on their servers and permit you to upload a certain amount of files, meaning you can create a web site. Server space is so cheap these days, you can get virtually unlimited space for very small fees.

There are even hosting companies that offer FREE web space. So you can get yourself a cheap domain for $1, then find yourself some free web space, then upload your site, and you're away, all for the cost of $1. Some of these companies insist that you display their ads on your pages, so that's a small price to pay for free web hosting! Having said that, some free hosts, don't display ads. If you want proof, try these guys out: free domain site

When you get serious about hosting several domains, you'll want a real hosting company that can offer you much much more than a free service, including support. Now support is very very important. Just imagine you have a great e-commerce site selling widgets to the world, and your server goes down. You NEED instant support. You will not get that with free hosts, so it's worth paying for. One of my favourite hosts is Dreamhost, and if you use this link to sign up you get up to $40 discount so it is worth checking out.

When you host your domain name and get web space, you'll also get e-mail addresses. So you might have unlimited addresses, or maybe a max of 50. If your domain name id i-am-great.com, you van have anything before the @ sign for an emaili address. So you can have info@i-am-great.com, you can also have admin@i-am-great.com and so on. This allows you to organise your business effectively.

One last thing to consider is available bandwith or traffic that you service allows. If you turn into a google overnight, you will crash your hosts server, as I seriously doubt whether they could cope with millions of hits a day. But let's face it, if you can get millions of hits a day, you can afford to pay for unlimited bandwidth!
